I write from Kitui, Kenya. The first week has been ver hectic. I stayed this past weekend with a priest, Fr. Richard Ngutu, in the small town called Kenyangi, Kenya. It is one of the poorest areas of Kenya. The people are joyful and very kind. For many, it was the first time they have seen a white person. I enjoyed returning smile whenever I noticed someone staring! I met a retired Colonel from the Kenyan army and he gave us a sheep that we had slaughtered for a party last Monday evening. It was really good!
Fr. Richard is in charge of several schools. We went to several of them and I was blessed to be able to offer Holy Mass with the students. Then I gave them a chance to ask me questions. It was a great experience! We have also visited many family homes. The people are very warm and show generous hospitality. Needless to say I think I put on a few pounds.
Last Sunday the Governor of the county of Kitui came to our village for a fundraiser for the parish and the diocese. He is a devout Catholic. He was exceedingly kind to me and told me I must stop at his office before I leave Kitui.
Archbishop Nienstedt arrived yesterday and we had Holy Mass this morning (Wed. Oct. 8) at the Diocese of Kitui pastoral center. It was good to see our group together. For the next several days we will all be in Kitui and make day trips out of the city. Perhaps the highlight will be a large gathering for families from throughout the diocese that will take place this coming Saturday, Oct. 11. Next week we will be going on a safari to see several wild animals. I remember when I was a child watching shows on television about the lions, hippos and rhinos. But now I will get to see them a bit closer.
So far it is been a great adventure in Kenya! I thank you for your prayers and I assure you that am remembering you in my prayers as well.
I return Oct. 16 and look forward to sharing with you my many experiences!
Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, St. Joseph, St. Michael and St. Paul, may the blessings of God be upon us in great abundance!
