Words to Live By

“Expect temptation to your last breath.” St. Anthony the Great “Sufferings gladly borne for others convert more people than sermons.” St. Thérèse of Lisieux

“Fly from bad companions as from the bite of a poisonous snake.” St. John Bosco

“When God forgives a sinner who humbly confesses his sin, the devil loses his dominion over the heart he had taken.” St.Bernard of Clairvaux –

“You can’t do God’s work without suffering.” St. Mother Teresa

“Let the enemy rage at the gate; let him knock, pound, scream, howl; let him do his worst. We know for certain that he cannot enter our soul except by the door of our consent.” St. Francis de Sales -

“Sin is the assassin of the soul.” St. John Vianney

2.14.21

“If a man finds it very hard to forgive injuries, let him look at a Crucifix, and think that Christ shed all His Blood for him, and not only forgave His enemies, but even prayed His Heavenly Father to forgive them also. Let him remember that when he says the Pater Noster, every day, instead of asking pardon for his sins, he is calling down vengeance on himself.” St. Philip Neri

“He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many graces from God. As often as I look upon the cross, so often will I forgive with all my heart.” St. Faustina

“To the extent that you pray with all your soul for the person who slanders you, God will make the truth known to those who have been scandalized by the slander.” St. Maximus the Confessor

“For there are three ways of performing an act of mercy: the merciful word, by forgiving and by comforting; secondly, if you can offer no word, then pray - that too is mercy; and thirdly, deeds of mercy. And when the Last Day comes, we shall be judged from this, and on this basis we shall receive the eternal verdict.” St. Faustina

“The Christian law commands that we forgive our enemies and those who have wronged us. I must therefore say here that I forgive Taikosama. I would rather have all the Japanese become Christians.” St. Paul Miki - one of the Martyrs of Nagasaki

2.7.21

“Anyone who seeks Truth seeks God, whether or not he realizes it.” St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

“It is easy to find Truth, though it is hard to face It, and harder still to follow It.” Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen

“If you want peace, work for justice. If you want justice, defend life. If you want life, embrace the Truth - the Truth revealed by God.” St. John Paul II

1.31.21

“In the life of the body a man is sometimes sick, and unless he takes medicine, he will die. Even so in the spiritual life a man is sick on account of sin. For that reason he needs medicine so that he may be restored to health; and this grace is bestowed in the Sacrament of Penance.” St. Thomas Aquinas
“The want of proper examination, true contrition, and a firm purpose of amendment, is the cause of bad confessions, and of the ruin of souls.” St. Benedict Joseph Labre

“Confession heals, Confession justifies, Confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in Confession; in Confession there is a chance for mercy.” St. Isidore of Seville

"Strive always to confess your sins with a deep knowledge of your own wretchedness and with clarity and purity." St. John of the Cross
“The devil does not bring sinners to hell with their eyes open: he first blinds them with the malice of their own sins. Before we fall into sin, the enemy labors to blind us, that we may not see the evil we do and the ruin we bring upon ourselves by offending God. After we commit sin, he seeks to make us dumb, that, through shame, we may conceal our guilt in confession.” St. Alphonsus Liguori

1.24.21

America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters". And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every hu-man being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign." Blessed Mother Teresa

“Be brave and try to detach your heart from worldly things.” St. John Bosco

“God doesn’t ask that we succeed in everything, but that we are faithful. However beautiful our work may be, let us not become attached to it. Always remain prepared to give it up, without losing your peace.” St. Teresa of Calcutta

“If ever you have a fit of sadness or trouble, remember that it is because you are still attached to life, or health, or some comfort, or person, or thing that you ought to forget and despise that you may desire Jesus Christ only.” St. Claude de la Colombiere

“Whatever a man loves he inevitably clings to, and in order not to lose it he rejects everything that keeps him from it. So he who loves God cultivates pure prayer, driving out every passion that keeps him from it.” St. Maximus the Confessor

“It is a reasonable consequence that he who runs after perishable goods should himself perish.” St. Teresa of Avila

1.17.21

“Our concern must be to know God’s will. We must enter that path: if God wants, when God wants, how God wants.” St. Gianna Molla

“The best thing for us is not what we consider best, but what the Lord wants of us.” St. Josephine Bahkita

“We need to find God and He cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is a friend of silence.” St. Mother Teresa

“Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices. St. Theresa of Avila

“There is no place for selfishness, and no place for fear! Do not be afraid, then, when love makes demands. Do not be afraid when love demands sacrifices.” St. John Paul II

“Lay all your cares about the future trustingly in God’s hands, and let yourself be guided by the Lord just like a little child.” St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
